The Curriculum
It is our belief that the school curriculum is essential in determining, moulding and empowering the young people we would want to turn out in order that they can take their place in society as responsible citizens and confident lifelong learners.
The curriculum has at its heart the notion that to develop young people in a rounded way there is a need to develop them socially, intellectually, physically, aesthetically, musically, spiritually and culturally.
To meet this end we have a comprehensive programme of subjects in what we call the taught curriculum; a raft of opportunities to have fun and engage in lifelong learning in the extended curriculum; a rich diet of personal, cultural and spiritual experiences in the personal development curriculum and a specialised programme of opportunities in our alternative provision curriculum.
We believe that having a rich variety of opportunity in this way, we create the possibility of individualised and personalised pathways into further education or the world of work, for our young people.

Curriculum and Assessment Structure
Unless a Key Stage 4 only subject, each subject will have a five year curriculum taught in fourteen curriculum periods, each of approximately ten weeks in length.
A subject assessment follows each curriculum period, allowing pupils to regularly show what they know and can do.
Therefore, each academic year has three curriculum periods and three assessment periods, other than in Year 11.
In Year 11, there are two curriculum periods and two assessment periods, followed by the revision period leading up to their final external examinations.
Key Stage 4 only subjects have five curriculum periods and five assessments periods, followed by the final revision period leading up to their final external examinations. An example would be GCSE Business Studies, which is not taught in Key Stage 3 (years 7-9.)
Reports and parents evenings follow the first two assessments and a final report is published at the end of the academic year following the final assessment.
Reports document a pupil's assessment performance in two ways:
- In year 7 to 10 - A percentage, with reference to the class and year average.
- In year 10 and 11 - A percentage, with reference to the class and year average and a GCSE grade (or other appropriate distinction depending on the course).
Each subject has planned their curriculum over five years but the Legacy curriculum that Year 10 and Year 11 are following is different as they began in Year 9 on a three Year GCSE.

Life in Modern Britain
Endon High School actively promotes the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. This is achieved through the effective spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils, including through our L4L curriculum, extracurricular activity and work within our local community.

The Personal Development Curriculum
Personal Development covers all areas within the Personal, Social and Health Education programme.
PSHE is provided for all pupils from Year 7 to Year 11. Some aspects are covered cross-curricularly through other subjects, but most are covered in our Learning for Life (L4L) sessions, as well as through enrichment days when the whole school comes off their normal timetable to spend a half or full day on key topics (e.g. sex education, drugs awareness, democracy, financial education, etc.).
The school was awarded a National trophy in February 2014 in recognition of its outstanding contribution to PSHE. In July 2018, the school achieved a Gold Standard Quality mark. We understand that this has only been awarded to two secondary schools nationally, which recognises the importance that we place upon educating our students through the taught and extra curriculum. The assessor noted in her detailed report:
“SMSC is truly embedded across the school. Pupils value the opportunities they have to deepen their understanding of wider moral questions and global issues and gave examples of SMSC development in all subjects as well as in the wider curriculum”.
